Wood Badge – Bringing Your Vision to Life

Wood Badge for the 21st Century is the ultimate leadership training program for all adult leaders in Scouting.  The course is open for leaders active in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Exploring, and Sea Scouts, as well as district or council roles.  All leaders are welcome from brand new Cub leaders, to very experienced Scoutmasters!  This is a fun and fast paced experience delivered in the framework of a model Troop with a mix of classroom and hands-on activities and games.  Completing this course will help you to identify and reach your vision to make your Scouting units stronger.  Many participants consider Wood Badge as the most valuable training they have ever taken, bar-none.  Wood Badge for the 21st Century stands ready to provide leadership for Scouting and leadership for America.

Wood Badge was first held in England in 1919 by Robert Baden-Powell, Scouting’s founder. Since its inception Wood Badge has been the training ground for literally hundreds of thousands of Scouters around the world, all of whom become members of “Troop 1” of Gilwell when they complete the course and earn their beads.  As the challenges in the world have changed, Wood Badge has also evolved to give leaders the skills they need to strengthen Scouting in meaningful ways. The latest version of Wood Badge training builds on the past, strengthens the present, and looks to the future. Reflecting the best of a century of the Scouting experience, the course also draws upon the most current leadership models used by corporate America, academic circles, and successful outdoor leadership organizations throughout the country. A wide range of sources are utilized to present the latest in leadership theory and team development.

Within this framework, participants take part in numerous presentations, discussions, and activities that explore and advance a wide range of leadership philosophies and tools. A key area of exploration is the process of team development. By recognizing the stages through which all teams must pass, participants will learn to apply appropriate leadership strategies that enable teams to reach their highest levels of performance.

Some of the other key skills taught during the course of this two-weekend program include,  Listening to Learn, Communication, Valuing People and Leveraging Diversity, Coaching and Mentoring, Servant Leadership, Stages of Team Development, Project Planning, Leading Change, Decision-Making and Problem-Solving, Managing Conflict, Values/Mission/Vision, and Leaving a Legacy.  In fact, many employers are very happy to have their employees participate in such a rich leadership development course.  So much so that many employers will actually pay for most of the program costs and many also grant paid time off to attend as well!

In 2018 Northern Star Council will be running two Wood Badge course, one in the winter and one in the fall.  These courses typically fill quickly so please do not hesitate to make a reservation now.  The total cost for the course is $250.  (A $100 deposit is due at the time of registration).  The fee covers meals, all equipment, and course materials for both weekends.
