Parker Smith Named 2017 Outstanding Eagle Scout

Awarded $2,000

Congratulations to Parker Smith, an Eagle Scout from Willmar, MN, for being selected as the “2017 Outstanding Eagle Scout of the Northern Star Council”.

The “2017 Outstanding Eagle Scout of the Northern Star Council” is awarded to an Eagle Scout who represents dedication and excellence within our local community. The recipients are Eagle Scouts who have touched and inspired others, and made a positive impact as public servants of their communities. These individuals have attained prominence at an activity, hobby, or outdoor adventure of some type as well. Smith received a $2,000 scholarship to be used in furthering his education.

A Deserving Scout

Smith is being recognized as a dedicated member and bright leader during his time as a Scout. He has participated in many national events including Sea Base, where he sailed from Miami to the Bahamas, as well as the 2013 National Jamboree. He lead a National Youth Leadership Training event as an Instructor at Grey Wolf Youth Training Program in previous years, where he taught the vital skills of communication, problem-solving, and leadership to younger Scouts. He looks forward to serving as a Senior Patrol Leader at Grey Wolf this summer.

“I believe that the best way Scouting prepares youth for the future is through personal development,” Smith said. “Values like those in the {Scout} Oath and Law provide a solid foundation for individuals to build themselves into well rounded members of society.”

Eagle Scout is the highest rank in the BSA, attained by approximately 6% of those who join. Smith earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Troop 3224 chartered to the Calvary Lutheran Church in the Trailblazer District. He was one of 25 recipients selected from more than 100 Eagle Scout Scholarship applicants completing their senior year in high school.

“My 12 year Scouting journey, culminating with the Eagle rank, has provided me with a brotherhood of like-minded individuals,” Smith said. “Scouting has surrounded me with people that I share the same moral values with, based off the Scout Oath and Law. This group of youth and adults has helped me grow both as a Scout, and as a member of the community.”

Scholarship Program

The Eagle Scout Scholarship program recognizes Scouts who have displayed extraordinary achievement in academics, athletics, troop leadership and overall service to their community. The program has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships since its inception in 1990.

Outside of Scouting, Smith is an active member of his community and school. He is a member of the Willmar Senior High School tennis team and jazz band, and actively participates in Model UN, a program dedicated to helping students explore current world issues and develop skills for active citizenship.

Smith attended UMN-Morris as a PSEO student for his senior year, where he participated in campus groups and clubs. During his first year there, he was a part of the Morris Campus Student Association and Campus Assembly. He will continue studying history and political science, and adding the responsibilities as a Community Advisor and student representative for the Board of Regents in the upcoming year.
