Next Steps for Membership Success

Continue to Recruit

Our 2016 School Night for Scouting campaign resulted in over 3,000 new families joining our ranks! This is great, but we know that there are many youth who missed the opportunity to join. Many of those youth need Scouting.

No2016_gph_nextsteps-membership_600x400w is the time to let them know that there is still time to join and reach out to invite them. Look at your youth roster as we begin our annual charter renewal and ensure that you have enough youth members from all grade levels to keep your unit healthy.

Here are steps all packs, troops and crews can do to add members:

  • Use your upcoming pack, troop or crew meeting or other activity as a recruitment event. Share that “It’s not too late to join your friends in Scouting” with follow-up fliers, personal invitations and digital promotions.
  • Put information on your unit Facebook page, which should include: A BIG welcoming invitation for people to come and check out your pack, troop or crew, when you meet, a recap of your activities, with action packed pictures, contact info, anything that is FUN and welcoming.
  • Have the families in your unit share their Scouting experiences on their Facebook, and ask them to use it as an invite to join Scouting.
  • Plan a “Bring a Friend” event or activity to share how much fun Scouting is. Have a well-planned event, and collect the names of prospective new Scouts from your existing members, and send the potential new members an invite.
  • Recognize Scouts who have recruited a friend. This could be a certificate, a Scout Challenge Coin, or something small to be used in the outdoors. These recognitions can be exciting and motivating. Having trouble thinking of something? Ask your Scouts what would be a good recognition.
  • When your unit is volunteering in the community or has a booth at a school open house, bring a laptop or tablet and be ready to sign up new families from the HeroScouts.org website.
  • Packs can hold a “Wear your Scout Shirt” day, encouraging all Cub Scouts to wear their blue uniform (Class A) or pack t-shirt (Class B) on the same day, to enhance visibility of Cub Scouting.
  • Contact your Chartered Organization partner to promote follow-up recruiting within their organization and/or congregation with use of mini-fliers, bulletin announcements, bulletin inserts, etc.
  • Recruiting resources are still available by contacting your District Executive and help is available through each district’s membership committee, edit
