Celebrate Scouting’s 107th Anniversary – Scout Sunday Feb 5 – Scout Sabbath Feb 11

Take Part in Unit, Church, Synagogue and Community-Wide Observances

February 8, 2017 will be Scouting’s 107th Anniversary. Plan now to help celebrate over a century of helping young people become “Prepared. For Life.” Here are four steps to recognize this milestone:

  1. Participate in your faith community’s service – Scout Sunday is February 5 and Scout Sabbath is February 11; attend in uniform, serve as greeters, ushers, conduct a service project, provide Scouting bulletin covers and more. Contact your district executive now for free bulletins. Patches and more promotional items are available for sale at the Scout Shops and online at ScoutStuff.org.  Link to Patch
  2. Use an anniversary theme for your Pack Blue and Gold Banquet, Troop Court of Honor or Crew Event – Share some fun facts on Scouting’s history and play some games from the past (found in various books such as original Scout handbook reprints, History of Cub Scouting available in the Scout Shops as well as from the North Star Scouting Museum of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting), highlight successful and notable local alumni, pick-up/use free placemats provided by our Northern Star Council Camps, invite former leaders and alumni and much more.
  3. Report to your chartering organization – This is a great time to present a formal thank you and update at a meeting or gathering. This could include the numbers of: youth members and adult leaders, advancements earned (ranks, and merit badges for Scouts), nights of camping, community service hours as well as notable highlights such as Eagle Service projects or special pack, troop or crew events.
  4. Do a Good Turn on 2/8/16 as part of our community-wide campaign – Help our Scout Slogan of “Do a Good Turn Daily” take on even greater significance as part of our new #LikeAScout media campaign. We have partnered with our friends at iHeartMedia to take to the airwaves for the full day on Scouting’s Anniversary to share some of the positive influence Scouting has on our community, as well as to encourage everyone to be like a Scout and “Do a Good Turn. We will also ask all who do to share their good turn via social media using the hashtag: #LikeAScout. Our hope is to help initiate thousands of small acts of kindness! This promotion will include voiced ads from Dave Ryan, KDWB On-Air Personality and Scout leader, as well as other iHeartMedia employees currently or previously involved in Scouting. These spots will air throughout the day on KDWB, KFAN, K102, Kool 108, Cities 97 and AM 1130.

Start thinking now of some great Good Turns your unit and members individually could do and share at #LikeAScout!, as well as plan the rest of your local celebration.
