2018 Winter Camporee – RETURN OF THE YETI - Feb 16-18, 2018 – Results and Photos

Return of the Yeti 2018

Perfect Conditions made for a Fun Weekend!

On recent February weekend close to 100 Scouts and Scouters from Lake Minnetonka District, met at Baker Park for our annual Winter Camporee!  The weather couldn’t have been better, as there was plenty of snow, and it wasn’t too cold!  (There were also no bugs or mini-bears.)  Our Scouts experienced games, worked on merit badges, and participated in the OA sponsored Scavenger hunt. The weekend was capped off with an entertaining campfire even though the Yetis had made themselves scarce by that time.

Top honors in the Snow Sculpture contest went to Troop 174 and the Webelos from 301 also were recognized for their brilliant entry.  Additional winter fun was ICE FISHING, with the trophy and fishing pole going to Tristen from Troop 426, who caught 17 fish!   In a continuation from last year’s strong showing, once again, the Winter Camping Champions from Troop 570 swept most of the day’s events.  They won the Scavenger Hunt and the Best Campsite awards.  Troop 570 also won the Cook-off with a total of 74/100 points!  (No Yetis were harmed in the creation of their Winter Cook-off entry).

Finally, no winter camporee would be complete without the KLONDIKE DERBY! We had many different Troops trying a variety of sleds and techniques with varying degrees of success. Troops were challenged to haul their Scoutmaster on a Klondike sled as they competed in a series of tests to challenge their Scouting skills. While the competition was fierce, the defending champions relied on experience, talent, and muscle to retain the coveted Klondike Trophy. Congratulations to Troop 570 for another impressive victory!

  • First Place - Troop 570 - 34.42 minutes - Flaming Arrows
  • Second Place - Troop 570 B 41.43 minutes
  • Third Place - Troop 426 77.46 minutes - Sharks
  • Fourth Place - Troop 430 83.56 minutes - Badgers

A huge thank you to our host units, Troops 426, 430, and Troop 570.  Also, Julie Terpstra, David Olson, Jim Lindfors, Brian Klein, Brett Schneider, and the Order of the Arrow deserve recognition for their fine work on this camporee.  The Lake Minnetonka District Team pulled together another fantastic experience. Certainly, everyone who attended enjoyed the fantastic program and the great facilities at Baker Park. Congratulations as well to all the attendees, parents, and everyone else who made this a great event.

We look forward to seeing you again at our next big event, the spring "Iron Chef” Camporee on May 4-6, 2018.

Thank you,

Daron Meyer
