2009 Winter Camporee - Snow Ball Open - Surviving the Winter Gale - Gale Woods - January 16-18, 2009

Surviving the Winter Gale - Gale Woods

Thank you for giving so much of your time and energies in order to help us plan and run a very successful, Winter Camporee. It’s too bad that you could not have been there to see how much fun we all had. The weather was ideal and the facilities were quite nice. Mark Labaw prepared a fantastic cracker barrel. (Thank you, Mark!) The food was so good and plentiful that I was glad that I missed my dinner prior to getting there. The troops ran the events as planned, and I think everyone was quite happy with the prizes and trophies. (Have you seen the new traveling trophy for overall camporee winner? Very impressive.) Troop 174 OA members started off the evening with a blazing campfire that impressed scouts young and old. Kevin Kurtzman’s old, dry, hardwood helped, but the credit goes to the boys who showed that they knew how to stack it. Host troop 589 (my troop) slept in tents and earned the Northern Star Council’s Zero Hero award along with many other scouts & troops. And I can’t fail to mention the Klondike derby race. The course was perfect, the snow conditions were excellent, and the competition was fierce. Through hard work and a little luck (now really, I don’t think they planned to trip him), the winners prevailed in an exciting finish after many qualifying heats. Thanks to you and this whole team of volunteers, experiences from this camporee will be talked about for years to come. New friendships have been forged and old ones strengthened. Badges have been earned and more requirements have been signed off or earned. In short, through your leadership, we accomplished what we set out to do.

Yours in Scouting,

Mark Corpron, ASM
Troop 589
